All about RCD Files
The RCD file type is primarily associated with ABBYY FineReader.
What is an RCD file?
For example, some RCD files are used as ABBYY FineReader documents that hold scanned and OCR-processed text and images. Others are used by devices like digital voice recorders (such as the DS1064B) or measurement instruments that collect telemetry data.
These files may contain data in different internal formats and sometimes use a Microsoft Compound structure to compress and organize the information.
Typical use cases include:
How do you open RCD files?
You need a suitable software like ABBYY FineReader to open an RCD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your RCD file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a RCD file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

RCD file format details:
If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. In the following you will find our evaluation of the RCD files:
The RCD file extension is rarely used and includes many different file formats. But the following two file formats are common:
- 7% of all RCD files use the same file format, which have the signature 72 00. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The average file size is 870 KB with most files being between 400 KB and 2 MB in size.
- 7% of all RCD files are based on the popular Ogg file format. The Ogg format is an audio file format similar to MP3, but unrestricted by software patents. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. RCD files can be up to 1 MB in size, but are often around 5 KB - 1 MB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. ;OpusTags, ENCODER=Mozilla2.5OggS, OpusHead and libopus unknown-fixed. The file name record_20180601.rcd is typical for these files.
The remaining 86% of all RCD files are files with no common format, such as RcCad model, DOC and ABBRTU. Often described as config. If you want to find out what your RCD file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

How to solve problems with RCD files
- Associate the RCD file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open recording data files. Because only the current version supports the latest RCD file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available ABBYY FineReader update.
- To make sure that your RCD file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .RCD file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
