What is an RF file?

RF files mostly belong to Swann Security System. RF files are proprietary video files used mainly in security camera systems. They store footage from cameras in a format designed for surveillance.

Swann Security System: The majority of these files come from Swann cameras, where the RF format captures and archives video recordings. They often include metadata such as timestamps and basic camera settings.

Alternate Use: A small number of RF files are used with DVR Examiner software. Although sometimes labeled as an RF video file, this use is not common compared to the Swann system.

This format is specialized. To open and view an RF file, you should use the manufacturer’s software or a media converter that supports proprietary codecs.

The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our evaluation of the RF files looks like this:

The RF extension is very commonly found and predominantly uses a uniform format. The two most popular formats are as follows:

• 90% of all RF files are associated with RealFlash Clip. They consist of unreadable binary data. Most of these files are 2 MB to 260 MB in size. The file type was created recently. The keywords ALRSFile, RSFmI and Full are typical for these files. Such files are related to home, cctv, camera, device, swann, office, security and cameras.
• 1% of all RF files start with the bytes RSFm crucial for this file format. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. RF files can be up to 250 MB in size, but are often around 330 KB - 190 MB. The following keywords are characteristic: RSFmI. The following filename is common: CH01_20180601[NR].rf or CH02_20180601[MD].rf.

All other RF files (9%) have no consistent format, frequently e.g. PNG, AppleSingle, HANWFile and SIMPLE.
