Opening an RFL File
The RFL file type is primarily associated with Reason.
What is an RFL file?
In the case of Reason Studios, the file is a sound bank used by their Reason software. It contains instrument data, presets, and audio samples. You can find more details on the Reason Studios website.
Other instances of RFL files are binary data files found in games like Sonic Adventure DX and Elden Ring. In these cases the file stores game settings or resource data in a compact format.
There is also a usage where the file is part of a UnityFS package. Here, it acts as a Unity game resource file, bundling game assets such as textures, models, and audio clips.
- Reason Sound Bank: Contains musical instrument data and audio samples.
- Binary Game Data: Holds game configuration and resource information.
- Unity Game Resource: Bundles assets for Unity-based projects.
FilExt.com tip: Its internal structure is proprietary and specific to its original application. To open and view a RFL file, use the appropriate software—Reason for sound banks or specialized tools for game resource or binary files.
How can I open an RFL file?
You need a suitable software like Reason to open an RFL file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your RFL file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a RFL file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

RFL format details:
The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our analysis of the RFL files produces the following result:
The RFL file extension is not common and predominantly uses a uniform format. The file formats most commonly found in RFL files are:
- 70% of all RFL files are associated with Propellerhead Software Reason SoundBank. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The files are on average 250 MB in size and range from 2 MB to 1 GB. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as Propellerheads ReFill File. Examples of file names are Factory Sound Bank.rfl. These files can be linked to sound, factory, bank, refill, drum, reason, house, orkester, samples, warfare, asylum, jungle, abbey, neuro, viper, bass, road and zero.
- 9% of all RFL files internally utilize the UnityFS file format. UnityFS is short for "Unity File System". This Unity Game Engine package is a bundle of several compressed Unity assets. Each asset may contain 2D texture, text resources, music files, scene objects, etc. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. RFL files are between 3 MB and 49 MB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as BuildPlayer, UnityFS, resource and sharedAssets.
All other RFL files (21%) have no consistent format. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your RFL file!
