Opening RLF Files
The RLF file type is primarily associated with RenderMan.
What is an RLF file?
How to open RLF files
You need a suitable software like RenderMan to open an RLF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your RLF file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a RLF file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert RLF files:
- RenderMan by Pixar
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. RLF files are often referred to as RenderMan cads because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- ArcGIS (report) by ESRIArcGIS is a cross-platform geographic information system with geospatial data analysis and data visualization applications. It saves a report layout in an RLF file. This file format is classified as Page Layout.
- ArtCAM (pro relief) by AutodeskArtCAM is a discontinued 3D modelling and manufacturing software for Windows. It saves a pro relief in an RLF file. This file format is classified as CAD.
RLF file format:
To find out what program is needed to open RLF files, you need to determine the file format. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Below you will find our evaluation of the RLF files:
RLF is a very commonly used file extension and is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 65% of all RLF files are ArtCAM 3D Relief model files. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The files are on average 8 MB in size and range from 760 KB to 20 MB. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today. The files contain the following words: RELIEF FILE, pixels, wide, real units and 00mm high. Files like these are sometimes connected to artcam, free, aspire, vector, carving, wood, model and door.
- 10% of all RLF files internally utilize the XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. The contents of these files can even be read by a human. The files are often between 4 KB and 10 KB in size. The keywords <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>, <Report Version="2.0", Layer, Name, StartingPageNumber, True, DataSource Name, TOCField="" DatasetMode="0" and BrowseName are typical for these files. An example of a file name is Report.rlf. Such files are related to module.
All other RLF files (25%) have different formats, often, for example, Generated and UMTBOXSW. Files like these are sometimes linked to design, relief, robot, flower, download or bypass. Just click the "Choose your .rlf file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your RLF file is.

How to solve problems with RLF files
- Associate the RLF file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open looks. Because only the current version supports the latest RLF file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Pixar manufacturer website after an available RenderMan update.
- To make sure that your RLF file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
