What is an RLC file

RLC files mostly belong to IBM Rhapsody. RLC files have several distinct uses, and their purpose depends on the context in which they were created.
They can be:

• Renesas MCU linker scripts that define how compiled code is linked in embedded systems.
• Library packages or configuration files used in development environments such as Rhapsody, often managed with tools from IBM Products.
• A Run Length Compressed file that uses run‐length encoding to reduce file size.
• An image file or game resource file, storing graphic data and game elements.
• A raster layer configuration file used to organize image layers in applications like RasterLink from Mimaki.

How to open an RLC file

You need a suitable software like IBM Rhapsody to open an RLC file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. To view or edit RLC files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. The file type with the extension 'RLC' includes a lot of different file formats for different programs. However, the following two file formats are common:

• 6% of all RLC files have the same signature 1E 70 2C 88 00 00 00 00. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. A typical file size is 1 MB.
• 5% of all RLC files use ZIP compression, that is, an RLC file includes multiple compressed files. 1 to 30 compressed files are common. You can see the included files and images by renaming the file extension to .zip and then double-clicking it. The files are on average 250 KB in size and range from 14 KB to 1 MB. The keywords Definitions are typical for these files.

All the rest of the RLC files (89%) have different formats, often, for example, Xerox EDMICS-RLC bitmap. These files sometimes refer to arkusz, profile, abcplan, fauqa, beit, planprofile, brunico, lovran or plan.
