What is an SWM file?

SWM files mostly belong to DISM by Microsoft. An SWM file contains a fragment of a disk image that is saved in Windows Imaging Format (WIM). ImageX and/or DISM command line programs are used to split a large WIM (standalone Windows disk image) file into smaller units (SWM files) to be stored on smaller storage media. It is usually saved alongside other fragments which make up a single disk image used to deploy Windows Vista and newer versions of Windows. DISM can be used to merge a collection of SWM images. SWM is also the filename extension of a swap file used by Vim text editor.

How to open an SWM file

You need a suitable software like DISM to open an SWM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SWM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SWM file directly in the browser:. • 4% of all SWM files use the same file format, which have the signature VERSION@10.1;UNIQUEID@. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The file size is in the range of 680 bytes to 550 KB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. INPUTFC, SPATIALREFNAME, UNIQUEID, VERSION, WTYPE, DISTANCEMETHOD, EUCLIDEAN, EXPONENT, THRESHOLD and NUMNEIGHS.

The remaining 6% of all SWM files are files with no common format, the following 3 formats can be found: SupportWorks ESP Message. The category is call, sent, reference, effects or jxxuc.
