Opening TRL Files
The TRL file type is primarily associated with Vegas Pro.
What is a TRL file?
They are not defined by a single standard but work by storing data based on the originating application.
For instance:
- Movie Subtitle File - These files keep subtitle text for movies and are often known as Vegas Pro subtitle files, used in video editing software.
- Game Text Localization File - In some cases, TRL files store game dialogue and interface text for localization purposes.
- Trail Route File - These files capture GPS track logs or route data. They are used with mapping tools and more details can be found at Memory-Map.
- Trace List File - Certain TRL files hold data from optical time-domain reflectometry, useful in testing and measurement.
- Eyelink Data Trial File - These record eye tracking experiment data and are worked on with specialized viewers. More information is available at SR Research.
- Grid View Settings File - Some TRL files save layout configurations such as grid view settings, as seen in applications with DevExpress components. Check out DevExpress for more details.
FilExt.com note: If you have a TRL file, determine its origin by inspecting the content or file header. Use the corresponding software to open and view it, or try a text editor to look for clues.
How to open TRL files
You need a suitable software like Vegas Pro to open a TRL file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your TRL file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a TRL file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert TRL files:
- Vegas Pro
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. TRL files are often referred to as Vegas Pro data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Topocad by Chaos Systems ABTopocad is a CAD system developed for surveying calculations, COGO, transformation and for mapping, design and GIS connectivity. This file format is classified as CAD/CAM.
- Tracklogs Digital Mapping (Track Log) by TrackLogsExternally saved tracklogs from a digital mapping program. Used the Tracklogs proprietary digital mapping software, these files can be uploaded to a compatible GPS receiver and then downloaded to alternative software (e.g. GPS Utility) that can save it in a variety of common formats. The latest upgrade to GPS Utility (version 4.15.7) can read and write .TRL files. Related links: GPS Utility Home Page
TRL file format:
Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our evaluation of the TRL files is as follows:
The TRL file extension is not found very often and has no uniform or dominant file format. The file formats most commonly found in TRL files are:
- 20% of all TRL files have the same signature 11 00 00 00. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The files are often between 16 KB and 97 KB in size. The following keywords are characteristic: :>=<889=.
- 15% of all TRL files use the Microsoft Compound File format, also known as Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. This file format is used by previous Microsoft Office programs and other Windows programs and stores the data in complex containers and sections. The first 8 bytes of the CFB format are D0CF11E0A1B11AE1 (which looks like "DOCFILE"). They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. TRL files are between 2 MB and 4 MB in size. The file name chap01.trl or Chap00.trl is characteristic of these files.
All other TRL files (65%) have different formats, the following 4 formats can be found: XML. Often described as exploration, toggletrail or kryta. Just click the "Choose your .trl file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your TRL file is.
Technical Data for TRL File Extension
The following listing is compiled from the database produced by the 'Associate This!' program, selected data from the main FILExt database and file extension information submitted by users.
EXEFile: %ProgramFiles%\mfw\pfe\pfe32.exe %1
EXEFile: %ProgramFiles%\TRU\TruList.exe
a trl data file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with TRL files
- Associate the TRL file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest TRL file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Vegas Pro update.
- To make sure that your TRL file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .TRL file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
