Opening a VOCAB File
The VOCAB file type is primarily associated with TensorFlow.
What is a VOCAB file?
They may contain different types of vocabulary data such as a word frequency list, a tokenized vocabulary, or simply a list of known words. NLP frameworks use these files to map words to numeric indices, aid in tokenization, and support language model training.
The formats you see include:
FilExt.com note: You can open these files with any plain text editor. For processing or model training, tools like TensorFlow (TensorFlow website) or SentencePiece (SentencePiece on GitHub) are typically used.
How to open VOCAB files
You need a suitable software like TensorFlow to open a VOCAB file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your VOCAB file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a VOCAB file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert VOCAB files:
- TensorFlow
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. VOCAB files are often referred to as TensorFlow data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Apple II operating system
VOCAB format details:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our evaluation of the VOCAB files is as follows:
The VOCAB file extension is not found very often and includes different formats for the applicable programs. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 30% of all VOCAB files start with the bytes the, which are crucial for this file format. If you open these files in a text editor, you can view and read the content yourself. Most of these files are 840 KB to 1 MB in size. The file type is relatively new. The files contain the following words: from, have, just, like, that, this, with, film, movie, there, they, about, good, more, some, what and when. An example of a file name is imdb.vocab.
- 20% of all VOCAB files start with the bytes <unk>, which are crucial for this file format. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The average file size is 530 KB with most files being between 25 KB and 820 KB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. <unk>. The file name hindi_lm.vocab is typical for these files. Such files sometimes refer to wiki, tokenizer and hindi.
All other VOCAB files (50%) have different formats, such as die and pad. Sometimes used for decow, characters, sentencepiece, words, vecs or word. Just click the "Choose your .vocab file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your VOCAB file is.
Technical Data for VOCAB File Extension
a vocab text file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with VOCAB files
- Associate the VOCAB file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open text files. Because only the current version supports the latest VOCAB file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available TensorFlow update.
- To make sure that your VOCAB file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
