What is a VOCAB file?

VOCAB files mostly belong to TensorFlow. VOCAB files are specialized text files that store a list of words used in Natural Language Processing (NLP).
They may contain different types of vocabulary data such as a word frequency list, a tokenized vocabulary, or simply a list of known words. NLP frameworks use these files to map words to numeric indices, aid in tokenization, and support language model training.
The formats you see include:

Word Frequency List: Contains words along with counts of how often they appear. Frameworks like TensorFlow and fastText use this variant.

Tokenized Vocabulary List: Lists preprocessed tokens for language models, as seen with SentencePiece.

Standard Vocabulary File: A simple list of words that can be used by Python libraries and VocabHelp.

How to open VOCAB files

You need a suitable software like TensorFlow to open a VOCAB file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your VOCAB file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a VOCAB file directly in the browser:. Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our evaluation of the VOCAB files is as follows:

The VOCAB file extension is not found very often and includes different formats for the applicable programs. The two most common formats are as follows:

• 30% of all VOCAB files start with the bytes the, which are crucial for this file format. If you open these files in a text editor, you can view and read the content yourself. Most of these files are 840 KB to 1 MB in size. The file type is relatively new. The files contain the following words: from, have, just, like, that, this, with, film, movie, there, they, about, good, more, some, what and when. An example of a file name is imdb.vocab.
• 20% of all VOCAB files start with the bytes <unk>, which are crucial for this file format. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The average file size is 530 KB with most files being between 25 KB and 820 KB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. <unk>. The file name hindi_lm.vocab is typical for these files. Such files sometimes refer to wiki, tokenizer and hindi.
