What is a DFT file?

DFT files mostly belong to Solid Edge by Siemens. A DFT file is the draft of a 2D/3D drawing created with Solid Edge computer-aided design/engineering software. This file is stored in Compound Document format. PC Draft 2D drawing software uses a DFT file to store drawings. DFT is also the filename extension of a data file used by the drafting tool in cncKad computer aided design and computer-aided manufacturing program for CNC applications. The SmartWare programming environment saves database transaction definitions in a DFT file. DFT is also the filename extension of EES general equation solving program's output data file.

How to open DFT files

You need a suitable software like Solid Edge to open a DFT file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. To view or edit DFT files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. The DFT file extension is quite widespread and is primarily used by a single program. The file formats most commonly found in DFT files are:

80% of all DFT files use the Microsoft Compound File format, also known as Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. Compound document files are used to structure the contents of a document in the file. It is possible to divide the data into several streams, and to store these streams in different places in the file. In this way compound document files support a complete file system inside the file, the streams are like files in a real file system, and the sections are like subdirectories. The first 8 bytes of the CFB format are D0CF11E0A1B11AE1 (which looks like "DOCFILE"). Each DFT file has an application name, which is Solid Edge, Solid EdDoc, SoliDocVers or Solid Edÿÿÿÿÿÿ. There is also a globally unique identifier 016b11fb-cdc0-11ce-a035-08003601e53b. The file contains several sections with names like PARASOLID, Display, PSMroots, JSitesList, DocVersion2, PSMcluster0, PSMtypetable, Versions, PSMspacemap, PSMuserroots, BuildVersions, MSConvertedPropertyset, PSMsegmenttable, PSMclustertable, SummaryInformation, C3teagxwOttdbfkuIaamtae3Ie, JVisibleData, DocumentSummaryInformation, JBlocks, Rfunnyd1AvtdbfkuIaamtae3Ie and JDraftViewerInfo. DFT files can be up to 200 MB in size, but are often around 220 KB - 4 MB. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. Such DFT files store data about draft, layout, drawing, plate, assembly, plan, cover, projection, electrode, template, front, issue and panel.
3% of all DFT files are based on the popular UTF-16 (LE) file format. UTF-16 (LE) is an character encoding system for Unicode. UTF-16 files can be viewed in any modern text editor. These files start with the two bytes FF FE, the so called byte order mark (BOM). They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. DFT files are between 12 KB and 89 KB in size. The keywords None, Version, cncKad and gKad are typical for these files.

All other DFT files (17%) have no uniform format, the following 7 formats can be found: GZIP, TOPCOMPRESS, gKad, body and FNTF.
