What is a DIR file?

DIR files mostly belong to Windows by Microsoft. DIR files on Windows operating systems are zero-byte, hidden files generated by the setup of Microsoft programs. Such DIR files are named mscreate.dir and they are saved in every directory created by a program's setup during installation. A DIR file is used to determine if a directory is empty or whether it can be removed in maintenance mode. DIR is also a filename extension of INFO database files used by the directory manager in ArcGIS. Backup Exec, a system backup program saves CPS (Continuous Backup Protection) data in a DIR file. SharePoint Server 2007, a document management and storage platform developed used DIR files to save temporary data during backups. The base name of temporary DIR files are usually numbers. Video games such as Grand Theft Auto III (a racing/shooter video game) and Worms Armageddon save game data such as models, images, music, and maps in a DIR archive file.

How to open a DIR file

You need a suitable software like Windows to open a DIR file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your DIR file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a DIR file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

To view or edit DIR files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Below you will find our evaluation of the DIR files:
