What is an MDX file

MDX files mostly belong to Daemon Tools by Disc Soft. MDX stands for Media Data eXtended file. The MDX file format is used to store extended media descriptor information creating by DT Soft's DAEMON Tools software.

  • Main Use: DAEMON Tools is a virtual drive and optical disc authorization software that can be installed on Windows PCs and Macs. MDX files are present in the CD/DVD disc image files created by this software. The collective information concerning the disc formatting present in MDS and MDF files can be embedded in a single MDX file.
  • Other Uses: MDX files are also used by the real-time strategy video game Warcraft III. Warcraft III uses MDX files to store 3D game modeling data containing textures and meshes that make up the skeletal framework for units or buildings. Besides saving the default 3D models, MDX files can also be used in the customization of existing 3D models and the creation of new ones using editors such as MDX Squisher for Windows. MDX file format can also be used by database software such as dBase IV or Borland InterBase to store multiple index file data. The MDX files are generally accompanied by a DBF database file of the same name and contain the data needed to read the DBF database file.

How to open an MDX file

You need a suitable software like Daemon Tools to open an MDX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MDX file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MDX file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

MDX file format:

If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our examination of the MDX files comes to the following conclusion:
