Opening a MOS File

The MOS file type is primarily associated with FICO Xpress.

What is a MOS file?

MOS files mostly belong to FICO Xpress. MOS files are not a single file format but a label for several types of files that come from different fields.

Telecom automation: Some MOS files are Ericsson shell scripts and network management files that use MML (Man-Machine Language) for network commands. See Ericsson.

Optimization models: Other MOS files are used by FICO Xpress Mosel. These files store mathematical models with variables and constraints for optimization problems. See FICO Xpress Optimization.

Weather simulation data: A group of MOS files contains weather data used for building energy simulations with tools like EnergyPlus. See EnergyPlus.

RAW imaging: Some MOS files hold raw images from Mamiya Leaf cameras, often structured as TIFF data.

How do you open MOS files?

You need a suitable software like FICO Xpress to open a MOS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MOS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MOS file directly in the browser:. • 10% of all MOS files use the same file format, which have the signature 23 31. The content consists of binary data as well as text and words. The average file size is 1 MB with most files being between 1 MB and 1.2 MB in size. The files contain the following words: LOCATION, double tab1(8760,30), Heating, #DESIGN CONDITIONS,1,Climate, 2009 ASHRAE, Climate Design Data 2009 ASHRAE Handbook and Design Data. A common filename is USA_CA_San.Francisco.Intl.AP.724940_TMY3.mos. Files like these have the following tags: intl, iwec and cswd, and almost always comprise personal data.
• 8% of all MOS files use the same file format, which have the signature ############. If you open these files in a text editor, you can view and read the content yourself. MOS files are between 1 KB and 14 KB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as ############, - File name, File name, - Creation date, Creation date, # - Mo shell version, AIRTEL, Cellular, Idea and # - Mo shell version: 11.0f. Files like these are sometimes connected to cellular, airtel, kenya, idea, script, project, corner, abis and lran.

The remaining 82% of all MOS files are different files with different signatures, such as Leaf/Aptus/Mamiya MOS raw image, Infinity Engine graphic, XML, model, encoding, all and DoNotEditThisLine.
