What is an OLD file

OLD files mostly belong to Old Version. Sometimes used as a backup indicator. When a file is changed (e.g., AUTOEXEC.BAT) often a backup copy is made first (e.g., AUTOEXEC.OLD) so changes can be reversed.

OLD file format:

Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. OLD is a very commonly used file extension and does not have a uniform file format. But the following two file formats are common:

• 15% of all OLD files start with the magic bytes 20, which are always the first bytes of this file format. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. The files are on average 350 bytes in size and range from 150 bytes to 1 KB. This file type is based on cutting-edge technology.
