What is an ONE file?

ONE files mostly belong to OneNote by Microsoft. ONE is a file format used by several applications and has multiple associations with other formats. It is most commonly used by OneNote, a free-form note-taking program by Microsoft, which supports inserting graphics, links, audio, and video, and can be shared across supporting systems.

A OneNote file consists of sections that act as containers for metadata, properties, pages, and other sections. A page acts as a container for user-defined content and the ONE notebook file holds multiple files in a single directory. Microsoft has since disontinued OneNote for Windows in favor of a cloud powered OneNote's ecosystem of apps.

It was previously used by DocPointer Visual ReadMe, a free program that displays visual ReadMe files to users, before Microsoft took the extension gave it the identifier string Hex: E4 52 5C 7B 8C D8 A7 4D AE B1 53 78 D0 29 96 D3, (ASCII: .R\...M..Sx.). DocPointer Visual ReadMe now uses B4U file format.

ONE ReadMe files are not just plain text files but support advanced features such as navigation with links, similar to HTML. DocPointer Visual ReadMe helps users to create visual navigation maps to files and websites on Windows, saving the data with the ONE extension. Notes can be added to these links, and an intuitive desktop functionality can be created. DocPointer Visual ReadMe combines features from desktop computers, browsers, and drawing applications.

The ONE extension is used to save files with license information for EdgeCAM/CAD program by Pathtrace. The license is USB dongle based and is updated using ONE files on Windows and Linux.

To create ONE file, you need an appropriate program, depending on how you intend to use the file.

Microsoft's OneNote creates and edits free-form notes, DocPointer Visual ReadMe creates navigable maps of file on the computer, while EddgeCAM/CAD ONE license files are distributed by the manufacture.

The default directory for ONE files on Windows is \Users\user name\AppData\Local\Microsoft\OneNote\version\Backup while on Mac it's ~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.onenote.ma.
Other programs that can open ONE files include Evernote, Gorillized Outline, Notebook Importer and OneNote Online, a browser-based version. However, in the future, OneNote will eventually become fully cloud-based and users will be forced to save their files in OneDrive folders only.

Other file associations include ONEPKG, B4U, SVG, RNT, TME, and XPS.

How to open ONE files

You need a suitable software like OneNote to open an ONE file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your ONE file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a ONE file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

To find out what program is needed to open ONE files, you need to determine the file format. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our evaluation of the ONE files is as follows:

The ONE file extension is very common and mainly uses a special format. The two most popular formats are as follows:

The remaining 9% of all ONE files are different files with different signatures. The category is backup, notas, general, schnelle, pages, abschnitt, viajes, found or neuer. Just click the "Choose your .one file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your ONE file is.
