All about PBD Files
The PBD file type is primarily associated with PowerBuilder.
What is a PBD file?
- Supported file systems: Only FAT12, FAT16, FAT32, and NTFS file systems are supported. This means that it can generally only be used on a machine running Windows. You cannot use PBD files to transfer data to Linux nor macOS machines. The maximum capacity of a compatible disk is 16TB.
- Structure: PBD is a binary image file. It is not meant to be manually opened, but rather using the appropriate software. You can explore the files within a PBD file by using a special tool that can be downloaded separately from the main software. The aforementioned file system limitations still apply.
How do you open PBD files?
You need a suitable software like PowerBuilder to open a PBD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PBD file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PBD file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

PBD file format:
If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our evaluation of the PBD files is as follows:
PBD is a very commonly used file extension and mainly uses a defined PBD format. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 75% of all PBD files are associated with PowerBuilder Dynamic library. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. A typical file size is 800 KB. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. The files contain the following words: HDR*P and HDR*PowerBuilder. Files like these have the following tags: acracp, reports, custom, report, datawindow, process, mylapstrackside, application, account, data, fpsp, kdbs and life.
- 10% of all PBD files use the same file format, which have the signature IMGF. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The files are on average 63 GB in size and range from 4 GB to 230 GB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as IMGF and My Backups. Disco 0_20180601_Full_v1.pbd or Local Disk C_20180601_Full_v1.pbd is a typical file name. Files like these are sometimes connected to disk, backup, disco, local, system and laufwerk.
All other PBD files (15%) have different formats, such as FIMG. They are often associated with seguridad, sauvegarde, archivos, sistema, storetrack, inventory, retailwiz, fichier, eclaim, online, admin, smart, users, menu or siac. How to solve problems with PBD files
- Associate the PBD file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open dynamic link library files. Because only the current version supports the latest PBD file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Sybase manufacturer website after an available PowerBuilder update.
- To make sure that your PBD file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .PBD file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
