Opening SO Files

The SO file type is primarily associated with Linux.

SOFile Extension SO
File extension: SO
File type:  shared object

What is a SO file

SO files mostly belong to Linux by Linux Foundation. A SO file is a shared object saved in Executable and Linkable format and used by programs on Linux-based operating systems. Such shared objects contain a library which is automatically loaded into a program at compile time. Because Android uses a modified fork of Linux kernel, some Android applications also use this kind of shared object library. Another type of SO file is a dynamic link library (similar to a shared object) saved in DLL format and used as plugins in programs such as SketchUp. Shared object libraries are usually compiled from source code written in C#, Pascal, C++ etc.

How to open a SO file

You need a suitable software like Linux to open a SO file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SO file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SO file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert SO files:

  1. Linux by Linux Foundation
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. SO files are often referred to as Linux developers because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
  2. Android NDK (compiled module) by Google
Android NDK is a software development kit that allows developers to build parts of an Android application in native code using C and C++ languages. A module compiled with Android NDK is saved in a SO file. This file format is classified as Developer.
  3. DRAGN (graph algorithm) by Oberlin
DRAGN is a discontinued data visualization tool. The graph algorithm used by this tool is saved in a SO file. This file format is classified as Developer.
  4. GCC (shared object) by Free Software Foundation
GCC (short for GNU Compiler Collection) is a command line software suite featuring compilers for languages such as Ada, C++, C, and Fortran. It uses a SO file to store shared objects compiled from code written in these languages. This file format is classified as Developer. Related links: Fortran, GNU Fortran
  5. TAPCIS (sysop commands) by TAPICS Developers
TAPICS is a discontinued program used to access CompuServe forums on DOS platforms. Its sysop commands are saved in a SO file. This file format is classified as Developer.
  6. Windows (dynamic link library) by Microsoft
Windows is a proprietary operating system for desktop, server, mobile, and IoT platforms. Applications developed for desktop and server editions of Windows use dynamic link libraries saved in SO files. This file format is classified as Executable.

SO format details:

A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Below you will find our evaluation of the SO files:

The SO extension is very commonly found and is mainly used by one program with a specific format. But the following two file formats are common:

The remaining 13% of all SO files are files with no common format, the following 13 formats can be found: ZIP, UnityFS, vRcpbyR, Smart and FILE. Files like these are sometimes linked to cpython, android, libgame, linux, libflutter or libcocos. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your SO file!

a so shared object is a special file format by Linux Foundation and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.

How to solve problems with SO files

  • Associate the SO file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open shared objects. Because only the current version supports the latest SO file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Linux Foundation manufacturer website after an available Linux update.
  • To make sure that your SO file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .SO file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
