Opening TRC Files
The TRC file type is primarily associated with SQL Server.
What is a TRC file?
How can I open a TRC file?
You need a suitable software like SQL Server to open a TRC file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your TRC file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a TRC file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert TRC files:
- SQL Server by Oracle
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. TRC files are often referred to as SQL Server databases because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- a-squared (anti-malware checksum for signatures) by EMSIa-squared is a discontinued antivirus software for Windows. Its anti-malware checksum for file signatures are saved in TRC files. This file format is classified as Data.
- FCAccess Analyzer (trace data) by AncotFCAccess Analyzer is a discontinued fibre channel analysis, test, and measurement program. It saves debugging trace information of an Ancot fibre channel in a TRC file. This file format is classified as Data.
- Opensim (marker coordinates) by SimbiosOpensim is a free and open source program used for biomechanical modeling and simulation. This program saves marker coordinates in a file with TRC filename extension. This file format is classified as Data.
- Oracle Database (trace log) by OracleOracle Database is a cross-platform, multi-model database management system with SQL and NoSQL support. It saves the trace log of a debugging operation in a TRC file. This file format is classified as Data.
- Power CTrace (debug support data) by Mix SoftwarePower CTrace is a software library for debugging programs written in C programming language. Its debugging support data is saved in a TRC file. This file format is classified as Data.
- Sniffer (network packet capture) by McAfeeSniffer is a discontinued DOS network packet capture and analysis program. Network packets captured with Sniffer are saved in a TRC file. This file format is classified as Data.
- TFMail (configuration) by The nms ProjectTFMail is a Perl library that provides form-to-email functionality on a web page. It uses configuration saved in a TRC file. This file format is classified as Settings.
- Times Reader (annotated article) by New York TimesTimes Reader is a discontinued Windows and macOS application for reading news articles published by the New York Times. It used a TRC file to store annotated articles. This file format is classified as Data.
- True BASIC (compiled code) by True BASICTrue BASIC is a software development environment and a programming language. Code that has been compiled with this program is saved in a TRC file. This file format is classified as Executable.
TRC file format:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Below is our analysis of the TRC files:
TRC is one of the most common file extensions and covers different formats for different programs. The following file formats are most commonly found in TRC files:
- 35% of all TRC files start with the bytes AppReg Format Ex crucial for this file format. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. TRC files are between 17 KB and 75 KB in size. The file type was created 20 years ago but is still used today. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as AppReg Format Ex. These files are attributed to fiber, core, port, trace, fibra, courthouse, carteret, county and hilo.
- 15% of all TRC files are using the well-known UTF-16 (LE) file format to store the data. UTF-16 (LE) is an character encoding system for Unicode. UTF-16 files can be viewed in any modern text editor. These files start with the two bytes FF FE, the so called byte order mark (BOM). The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The files are 99 KB to 20 MB in size, with a median of 2 MB. The keywords Microsoft SQL Server are typical for these files. Such TRC files store data about deadlock, profiler, bosfrontsql, analysis, blocking, dellmpand, snapshot, member, record, tarce, thtxn, info, ritm and sync.
The remaining 50% of all TRC files are files with no common format, such as Track Row Column markers data format, DOC, UTF-8, FILEVERSION, WAVEDESC, Trace, UTTH and trc. Often described as snap, prueba, signtool, dump, accession, saphbpk, sample or plate. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your TRC file!

a trc trace log is a special file format by Oracle and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with TRC files
- Associate the TRC file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open trace logs. Because only the current version supports the latest TRC file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Oracle manufacturer website after an available SQL Server update.
- To make sure that your TRC file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .TRC file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
