What is an XPS file

XPS files mostly belong to XPS Viewer by Microsoft. An XPS file is a document written in the Open XML Paper Specification page description language developed by Microsoft as an alternative to PDF. A single XPS document comprises multiple XML-encoded files containing the markup of the document's layout. Data such as embedded images and other media are saved alongside these XML files in the same XPS document. XPS Document Writer and XPS Document Reader are the default programs for authoring and reading XPS documents. Another type of XPS file is a mesh of a model's pose created by XNA Posing Studio.

How to open XPS files

You need a suitable software like XPS Viewer to open an XPS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your XPS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a XPS file directly in the browser:. XPS file format:

To view or edit XPS files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. The XPS file extension is very common and is mainly used by one program with a specific format. The two most popular formats are as follows:

• 90% of all XPS files use the ZIP algorithm, so several files are combined and compressed into one XPS file. The number of files included is on average 18 and ranges from 12 to 60. Customary file names are FixedDocumentSequence.fdseq, [Content_Types].xml, \_rels\, \Documents\, \Documents\1\FixedDocument.fdoc, \Documents\1\Metadata\Page1_Thumbnail.JPG, \Documents\1\Pages\_rels\1.fpage.rels, \Documents\1\Pages\1.fpage, \Documents\1\Resources\ and \Metadata\. Tip: If you rename the file ending to .zip and then double-click it, you see the included files and images. XPS files are between 74 KB and 950 KB in size. The keywords Metadata/Job_PT.xml are typical for these files. These files can be linked to book, report, certificate, form, statement, card, unit and word.
• 2% of all XPS files use the same file format, which have the signature A0 EE 04 00. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. Most of these files are 460 KB to 3 MB in size. The following keywords are characteristic: XNAaraL, xps--, XNALara, data and root ground. An example of a file name is xps.xps.
