Opening an XTS File
The XTS file type is primarily associated with Xshell.
What is an XTS file
Other applications use the same XTS extension in different ways:
- CAD Models / Extended Time Series: Some XTS files are compressed with GZIP and contain CAD model data. These are used in design programs such as CATIA and Creo.
- XTools Serialized Data: Certain files hold serialized, time series data generated by XTools.
- XML Data Files: A few versions are stored as XML files. These contain measurement data from devices like Agilent's SDA1000 Spectrum Analyzer.
FilExt.com note: Before opening an XTS file, confirm its origin and format. Using the correct application is critical to view or edit its contents correctly.
How to open XTS files
You need a suitable software like Xshell to open an XTS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your XTS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a XTS file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert XTS files:
- Xshell
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. XTS files are often referred to as Xshell settings because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Babya
- CSPro File(combined IMPS and ISSA Census Processing System)
XTS format details:
The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Below is our analysis of the XTS files:
XTS is rarely used as a file extension and is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 60% of all XTS files are based on the zip format, so multiple files are compressed and stored together in one XTS file. The 4 to 170 compressed files are called xts.zcf. A little tip: If you rename the file extension to .zip and then double-click, you will see the included files and images. The file size is in the range of 4 KB to 410 KB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. Xshell/UT and xshUT. session_xsh.xts or session.xts is a typical file name. Such XTS files store data about xshell.
- 9% of all XTS files are based on the well-known GZIP file format. Gzip is a compressed archive file format. Gzip (GNU zip) is only capable of compressing a single file. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. XTS files can be up to 9 MB in size, but are often around 6 KB - 5 MB.
All other XTS files (31%) have no uniform format. You can get all the details of your XTS file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .xts file to analyze" above.
Technical Data for XTS File Extension
an xts configuration file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with XTS files
- Associate the XTS file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open configuration files. Because only the current version supports the latest XTS file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Xshell update.
- To make sure that your XTS file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
