Opening DBI Files
The DBI file type is primarily associated with FileMaker Pro.
What is a DBI file
These files appear in several systems and contexts. For example:
- FileMaker Pro Database Index: Stores index information for FileMaker Pro to quickly locate records.
- Acronis True Image Backup Metadata: Holds information about disk image backups. You can find details on how it works on the Acronis website.
- Game and Simulation Data: Used in titles like FIFA 99, Myth 2, and design applications (such as STAAD.Pro) to manage game assets or simulation parameters.
- SQL and Jet Database Systems: Employed by systems such as SQLite and Microsoft Access to manage query performance. More on Access can be read on the Microsoft Access page.
- ERP and Accounting Software: Occasionally, these files index data in specialized accounting or ERP systems.
FilExt.com note: This file is binary and intended to be used only with its native application. Do not edit it manually, as changing its structure may corrupt the main database.
How to open a DBI file
You need a suitable software like FileMaker Pro to open a DBI file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your DBI file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a DBI file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

DBI format details:
To find out what program is needed to open DBI files, you need to determine the file format. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our evaluation of the DBI files looks like this:
DBI is not that commonly used as a file extension. This file type includes very many different file formats. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 9% of all DBI files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "MQDB" at the beginning. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. DBI files are between 590 KB and 860 KB in size. The keywords MQDB, MQRC, FD026S00, FD027S00 and FD028S00 are typical for these files. An example of a file name is UNIT.DBI or BATTLE.DBI.
- 8% of all DBI files store the data in the JetDB file format. The JetDB is a database format often used by Microsoft Access and Visual Basic programs. JET is short for Joint Engine Technology. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. DBI files are between 830 KB and 8 MB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. Standard Jet DB. The file name NewFile.dbi is typical for these files.
All other DBI files (83%) have different formats, often, for example, config, SQL, STR and FCDB. Tagged as kartei, contents, backup, phonebook, structure, msafdw, system or patch. Just click the "Choose your .dbi file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your DBI file is.
Technical Data for DBI File Extension
a dbi database index file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with DBI files
- Associate the DBI file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open database index files. Because only the current version supports the latest DBI file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available FileMaker Pro update.
- To make sure that your DBI file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
