What is a DLM file?

DLM files mostly belong to Download Station by Synology. A DLM file is a plugin used by 3DS Max modeling and animation program. Such plugins are saved in Windows executable (EXE) format. The Cloning feature on various Xerox printers use a DLM file to save a clone (backup) of their settings. DLM is also the filename extension of character delimited text files used in some applications. Add-ons used by the Download Station on Synology network attached storage systems are saved in DLM files. FileMaker relational database-driven application development environment saves data in a DLM file.

How to open a DLM file

You need a suitable software like Download Station to open a DLM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. 25% of all DLM files use the popular EXE file format. EXE is the abbreviation for executable and is the standard executable file format on Windows. The format can be identified by the letters "MZ" at the beginning. Executable files can also be used to distribute viruses and other types of malicious software (malware). These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The files are on average 220 KB in size and range from 62 KB to 1 MB. The keywords !This program cannot be run in DOS mode are typical for these files. Examples of file names are FloorGenerator_max2020_64bit.dlm or Quad Chamfer.dlm.
