Opening PMF Files
The PMF file type is primarily associated with ArcReader.
What is a PMF file?
How to open PMF files
You need a suitable software like ArcReader to open a PMF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PMF file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PMF file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

PMF file format:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the PMF files is as follows:
The PMF extension is quite commonly used. The file itself is used by different programs with different formats. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 65% of all PMF files are PlayStation Portable Movie Format files. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The files are 340 KB to 15 MB in size, with a median of 4 MB. This is an old file type which is rarely used today. The following keywords are characteristic: PSMF0014 and PSMF0015. The following filename is common: ICON1.PMF. Files like these are sometimes connected to ending, movie, gameboot, video, opening, title, titles and intro.
- 8% of all PMF files utilize the Microsoft Compound File format, which is also called Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. Compound document files work similarly to real file systems. They contain a number of independent data streams (like files in a file system) which are organized in a hierarchy of containers (like sub-directories in a file system). The first 8 bytes of the CFB format are D0CF11E0A1B11AE1 (which looks like "DOCFILE"). The file contains sections Bookmarks, Data Packaging, Document Preview, Document Version Info, Main Stream, Supplemental Stream, Advanced Stream and Identification. The files are on average 600 KB in size and range from 130 KB to 5 MB. Such PMF files store data about generala, harta, arborete and figure.
All other PMF files (27%) have no consistent format, often e.g. SQL and VIMG. These files sometimes refer to akay, worldclear, arcade, admin, attractmovie, titantron, magica, great, khali, dump, logo or safe. If you want to find out what your PMF file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

How to solve problems with PMF files
- Associate the PMF file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open published maps. Because only the current version supports the latest PMF file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the ESRI manufacturer website after an available ArcReader update.
- To make sure that your PMF file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .PMF file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
