Opening DRF Files
The DRF file type is primarily associated with WinPEP.
What is a DRF file?
- Main use: Discreet Render Format enables its users to store rendered images of buildings, architectures, and other modeled structures. Discreet Render Format files can be opened in the 3DS Max program.
- Limitations: The 3DS Max program does not allow its users to create DRF files. In order to create Discreet Render Format files, the users must use the VIZ Render program. Upon opening a DRF file using the 3DS Max program, the user must save the file in a MAX format. This is because the 3DS Max program does not support the creation of files in DRF format.
How to open DRF files
You need a suitable software like WinPEP to open a DRF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your DRF file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a DRF file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert DRF files:
- WinPEP by Dynojet Research
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. DRF files are often referred to as WinPEP data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- 3D Studio Max (3D image file) by Autodesk3D Studio Max is a program developed by Autodesk for creating three-dimensional models and animations. DRF files are used by 3D Studio Max to store rendered images. The file format is no longer supported and must be converted to a MAX file. This file format is classified as CAD. It plots high resolution waveform plots, transfers complete data sets or selected areas to optional analysis modules from Nicolet or third party software.
- DrFrame by DR-SoftWare, Inc.DrFrame provided a virtual environment for modeling truss and frame structures. The program was created by DR-SoftWare. It is now obsolete is no longer supported by the company. This file format is classified as CAD.

DRF file format:
To find out what program is needed to open DRF files, you need to determine the file format. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Below you will find our evaluation of the DRF files:
The DRF file type is a very commonly used file extension and mainly uses a defined DRF format. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 80% of all DRF files start with the bytes Document;, which are crucial for this file format. The contents of these files can even be read by a human. The file size is in the range of 22 bytes to 29 bytes. The file type is relatively new. The following keywords are characteristic: Document. These files are attributed to docx, docs, xlsx, acia, cfia, letter, agreement, management, request, admin and hall.
- 3% of all DRF files belong to Dynojet Run File. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. Most of these files are 2 KB to 4 KB in size. The keywords Dynojet Research 2002, Dynojet Research Rev 1.0, WINPEP7, zero, 11:14:30 and Nov 18 1997 are typical for these files. Some examples of file names are RunFile_001.drf.
All the rest of the DRF files (17%) have different formats, the following 6 formats can be found: Virtuoso Display Resource File, XML and DRF. The category is rdims, application, district, tracks, cdnv, form or plan. You can get all the details of your DRF file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .drf file to view" above.

a drf vehicle diagnostic information file is a special file format by Dynojet Research and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with DRF files
- Associate the DRF file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open vehicle diagnostic information files. Because only the current version supports the latest DRF file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Dynojet Research manufacturer website after an available WinPEP update.
- To make sure that your DRF file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .DRF file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
