Opening EDZ Files
The EDZ file type is primarily associated with Electric P8.
What is an EDZ file?
- Uses: The EDZ file is needed for the planning, documentation and management of electrical control, fluid power systems, and control systems projects. An EDZ file consists of macros for machine parts (such as control units, sensor modules, and line modules) and the related data of the parts. EDZ files are used to import of downloaded parts data into parts management system of the EPLAN Electric P8 solution.
- Additional Features: This format can import cluster data for the EPLAN Electric P8 solution. For the EDZ file, EPLAN has developed a data structure that categorized and assembles all production data into a single file. The EDZ file also has an API extension module that enables macros stored in EDZ to be converted into project modules utilized in Electric P8.
How to open an EDZ file
You need a suitable software like Electric P8 from EPLAN Software to open an EDZ file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your EDZ file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a EDZ file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

EDZ format details:
The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our evaluation of the EDZ files is as follows:
Files with the EDZ extension are quite widely used. This file type is primarily used by a single program. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 85% of all EDZ files are based on the popular 7z file format. 7z is a compressed archive file format that supports several different data compression, encryption and pre-processing algorithms. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The file size is in the range of 28 KB to 6 MB. This file type is based on cutting-edge technology. The following keywords are characteristic: (1v%f M*. Files like these are sometimes connected to pilz, eplan, electric, quadro, macro, sick, logix, parts and nfpa.
- 15% of all EDZ files use the ZIP format, i.e. an EDZ file contains several compressed files. Such a ZIP file contains 2 to 11 files. If you want to see the included files and images, simply rename the file extension to .zip and double-click it. The files are on average 230 KB in size and range from 18 KB to 4 MB.
If you want to find out which format your EDZ file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .edz file to analyze".
Technical Data for EDZ File Extension
The following listing is compiled from the database produced by the 'Associate This!' program, selected data from the main FILExt database and file extension information submitted by users.

an edz backup file is a special file format by EPLAN Software and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with EDZ files
- Associate the EDZ file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open backup files. Because only the current version supports the latest EDZ file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the EPLAN Software manufacturer website after an available Electric P8 update.
- To make sure that your EDZ file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .EDZ file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
