ESP file format:
To view or edit ESP files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our evaluation of the ESP files looks like this:
ESP is not a commonly used file extension and mainly uses a special format. But the following two file formats are common:
- 80% of all ESP files are TESIV:Oblivion Plug-in files. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. ESP files can be up to 17 MB in size, but are often around 1 KB - 1 MB. The file type was developed 20 years ago and is still in use today. The files contain the following words: HEDR, CNAM, MAST, DATA, Skyrim.esm, TES4, INTV, GRUP, DEFAULT, EDID and Update.esm. Such files sometimes refer to skyrim, patch, armor, unofficial and project.
- 5% of all ESP files are based on the popular JSON file format. JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) is a lightweight data−interchange format. It is easy for humans to read and write. It is easy for machines to parse and generate. The content consists of readable text data, which can be read using a text editor. The file size is in the range of 2 KB to 9 KB. The files contain the following words: dimensions, duration, frameRate, height, modelVersion, name, scenes, settings, timeFormat, width, animationModel and frames.
The remaining 15% of all ESP files are files with no common format, frequently e.g. Morrowind plugin. Just click the "Choose your .esp file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your ESP file is.
