Opening a PEX File
The PEX file type is primarily associated with West Publisher.
What is a PEX file
- Compatiblity: PEX files can support multiple platforms (eg. OS X, Linux, Windows) and Python interpreters, making them a great option for the distribution of many applications such as command line tools.
- Usage: You can build PEX files using the pex utility, which is made available when you install it using the pip package manager. This utility has no expected arguments and will, by default, create an empty environment and start it. When no entry points are specified, it starts the interpreter instead. You can change which interpreter is used by specifying the "--python=PATH" parameter. You can also specify other different requirements and entry points.
How do you open PEX files?
You need a suitable software like West Publisher to open a PEX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PEX file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PEX file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

PEX file format details:
To find out what program is needed to open PEX files, you need to determine the file format. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our evaluation of the PEX files is as follows:
PEX is one of the most common file extensions and is primarily used by a single program. The file formats most commonly found in PEX files are:
- 70% of all PEX files start with the bytes úWÀÞ crucial for this file format. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The average file size is 2 KB with most files being between 720 bytes and 17 KB in size. This file type is based on cutting-edge technology. The files contain the following words: GetState, GotoState, conditional and hidden. Such files are related to script, effect, actor, quest, race, menu, config and player.
- 15% of all PEX files use the same file format, which have the signature ÞÀWú. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. PEX files are between 590 bytes and 12 KB in size. The files contain the following words: Scripts, Source, Fallout 4, User, Data, common, steamapps, Steam and DESKTOP. Files like these have the following tags: workshop, weaponllinject, aaacfxterm, aaacfx, ssscr, perk and prkf.
All other PEX files (15%) have no consistent format, often, for example, SilkExplorer - Performance Explorer Workspace, shell script, ZIP and CATC. The category is alias, controller, library, base, spell or util. If you want to find out what your PEX file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.
