What is an EXB file?

EXB files mostly belong to Evernote by Evernote. An EXB file is a 2D or 3D drawing/model created with CAXA computer-aided design (CAD) program. Third-party CAD programs such as IronCAD also support EXB drawing format. Another type of EXB file is an SQLite 3 database containing all notes created with Evernote note taking and task management software. Using a locally stored EXB database to store notes ensures users can create and save notes in Evernote without internet access.

How to open EXB files

You need a suitable software like Evernote to open an EXB file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. The EXB extension is very commonly found and predominantly uses a uniform format. However, the following two file formats are common:

• 70% of all EXB files are based on the Microsoft Compound File format, also known as Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. This file format is used by previous Microsoft Office programs and other Windows programs and stores the data in complex containers and sections. Compound files begin always with signature bytes D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1 (ÐÏࡱá). The file contains sections that are named something like *BlockStg, *DBSelfData, *IDMgr, *PreviewStream, *SpaceStream, *StyleStream, *ImageStg, *AppInfoStream, *DictionaryStream, *FileInfoStream, *XrefInfoStream, SummaryInformation and DocumentSummaryInformation. EXB files are between 100 KB and 2 MB in size. It is a modern file type. These files are attributed to drawing, layout, diagram, electrical, line, machine, system, drawings and electric.
• 20% of all EXB files are CAXA drawing files. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The files are on average 160 KB in size and range from 29 KB to 940 KB. The files contain the following words: CaxaEbForWindows.
