Opening FMS Files
The FMS file type is primarily associated with Trophy Imaging.
What is an FMS file
Some FMS files use an XML format to store dental x-ray data as part of Trophy Imaging systems. These files record details from dental imaging devices and are managed by Trophy Imaging FMS.
Other FMS files are created by flight simulation software. They contain flight plan and route data used by applications such as X-Plane and Microsoft Flight Simulator. In this context, FMS stands for what many recognize as a Flight Management System file.
Additionally, several FMS files are game save data for Football Manager titles (e.g., Football Manager 2020, 2021, 2022), storing game progress and settings. FMS files also appear in other systems, such as Flash Media Server data, Case IH farm management data, and even font or sticker settings from Font Maker Studio.
How can I open an FMS file?
You need a suitable software like Trophy Imaging to open an FMS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your FMS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a FMS file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert FMS files:
- Trophy Imaging
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. FMS files are often referred to as Trophy Imaging data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- 1-2-3 (Impress Add-in) by IBM(associated with .WK1 or .WK3 file) This was a Lotus product. Lotus was bought out by IBM.
- FantaMorph (Skin File) by AbrosoftAbrosoft FantaMorph is morphing software for the creation of image morphing pictures and sophisticated animation effects.
- FMS32-PRO (FMS Protocol File) by HeiRueSoft[German site] FMS is an abbrevition for the German word Funkmeldesystem. FMS is used from authorities and organizations with security to transmit returning informations by cordless radio communications system in a digital manner. This is a Protocol file with tab-separated data elements and line-separated records.
FMS file format:
To view or edit FMS files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our examination of the FMS files comes to the following conclusion:
The FMS file extension is used very often and covers different formats for different programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 30% of all FMS files are based on the well-known XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. The average file size is 100 KB with most files being between 86 KB and 110 KB in size. The file type was developed only in the last few years. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as <!--Trophy FMS File-->, </FrameLocation>, <ClassID>4</ClassID>, <FMS_DATA>, <FrameLocation>, <X1>0</X1>, <X2>0</X2>, <Y1>0</Y1>, <Version>4</V and <Identifier>F1.fms</Identifier>. F1.fms or F2.fms is a typical file name. Such FMS files store data about person-related data.
- 10% of all FMS files start with the magic bytes I 1100 , which are always the first bytes of this file format. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. The files are on average 430 bytes in size and range from 190 bytes to 720 bytes. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. 1100 Version, NUMENR, ADEP, ADES, DRCT and CYCLE 1903. A usual file name is HRM.fms.
All other FMS files (60%) have no consistent format, often e.g. ZIP, version, CNH and LOG. These files sometimes refer to save, wdfms, egll, ksea, kjfk, chag, lfpg or rpll. If you want to find out what your FMS file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.
Technical Data for FMS File Extension
The following listing is compiled from the database produced by the 'Associate This!' program, selected data from the main FILExt database and file extension information submitted by users.
EXEFile: %ProgramFiles%\FRACTM~1\FractMus.EXE
an fms data file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with FMS files
- Associate the FMS file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest FMS file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Trophy Imaging update.
- To make sure that your FMS file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .FMS file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
