Opening FLS Files
The FLS file type is primarily associated with Firmware Utility.
What is an FLS file?
FLS files are not a single universal format; their function depends on the creator. In many cases these files serve as firmware update or system data files used by devices and software utilities.
For example:
- Firmware Update Files: Many vendors use the FLS extension for firmware updates. Devices like printers (from companies such as Lexmark, with details at Lexmark support), Dahua systems, and industrial modules (like those related to Caterpillar Electronic Technician data, referenced at Bentley) rely on these files to update internal software.
- Log Files: Some FLS files are in XML format and act as log files or transcripts (for example, the FTR Reporter log file as seen with FTR Player). These files capture event data or process reports.
- Scan and Simulation Data: Certain FLS files store data from laser scanning (such as those from FARO Scene using a Microsoft Compound format) or network simulations (like Filius network simulation files that are packaged in a ZIP container).
- Media and Miscellaneous Uses: There are also FLS files used for Flash-related functions. Some are noted as Flash Lite Sound files for gaming (as with Age of Empires III) or even for live sports data (e.g. Flash score files).
FilExt.com notes: Each file is built with a specific internal structure. Some use XML, Microsoft Compound, or ZIP compression to organize data. It is important to use the designated update or viewer software when handling these files, because editing them with a standard text editor may corrupt their contents.
How to open an FLS file
You need a suitable software like Firmware Utility to open an FLS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your FLS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a FLS file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

FLS file format:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our examination of the FLS files comes to the following conclusion:
The FLS file type includes different formats for different programs. The file formats most commonly found in FLS files are:
- 30% of all FLS files start with the bytes 1B 25 2D 31 32 33 34 35 58 40 50 4A 4C crucial for this file format. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. FLS files are between 520 KB and 200 MB in size. The file type is old but is used even today. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as DATE, PJL COMMENT NETFLASH ID, %-12345X@PJL, RIP, ENG, @PJL COMMENT This printer resident software contains and PJL COMMENT 1. Such files are related to scan, armbs, mxlsg, ppctgmne, armbse, studio and ppcmn.
- 15% of all FLS files use the popular XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. If you open these files in a text editor, you can view and read the content yourself. Most of these files are 1 KB to 480 KB in size. The files contain the following words: lognotes version, date, header, location, <?xml version="1.0"?>, description and <!--Created by FTR Reporter-->. These files are attributed to court, nhif, notes, dist and room, and usually contain person-related data.
The remaining 55% of all FLS files are different files with different signatures, the following 7 formats exist: DOC and ZIP. Sometimes used for project, base, scenario or faro. You can get all the details of your FLS file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .fls file to analyze" above.

How to solve problems with FLS files
- Associate the FLS file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest FLS file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Firmware Utility update.
- To make sure that your FLS file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .FLS file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
