Opening an RFX File
The RFX file type is primarily associated with RealFlight.
What is an RFX file
The RFX file extension is used by various industries and applications. Its primary use is to store simulation data for radio control flight simulations, often as a compressed ZIP container that holds model details such as aircraft configurations and settings.
Below are some common uses of RFX files:
- Radio Control Flight Simulator Files: Packaged in ZIP format, these files hold flight model data (often known as RealFlight model file formats) used in RC simulation programs.
- Cisco Router Configuration Files: These act as binary data containers for Cisco devices. They are used for storing router configurations. See more details at Cisco.
- Battery Test Data Files: Utilized by Arbin Instruments' MITS Pro systems, these files contain battery performance data. Additional information is available at Arbin.
- RenderWare Effects Files: Also called RichFX Effect Files, these store graphic effects data for rendering processes.
- Report Layout Files: Built with an XML structure, these files define data formats or report layouts for software like ActiveReports. More info can be found at ActiveReports Developer.
- 3D Rendering Files: Used in 3D design and project data exchange (such as the ArchiCAD Project Exchange Format), these files support modeling work in tools like Reluxa RFx Designer.
- Compressed Image/Resource Files: Created by applications like RFX Studio, these files often package image resources or FoxPro resource information and may be opened with resource editing tools.
FilExt.com note: Examine the file header with a text editor to match the file with its intended application. If the file shows a ZIP or XML structure, use an archive extractor or XML viewer to help identify and open it.
How can I open an RFX file?
You need a suitable software like RealFlight to open an RFX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your RFX file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a RFX file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert RFX files:
- RealFlight
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. RFX files are often referred to as RealFlight miscs because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Modula M2SDS File

RFX format details:
Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. In the following you will find our evaluation of the RFX files:
As a file extension, RFX isn't very common and is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. The following file formats are most commonly found in RFX files:
- 40% of all RFX files use ZIP compression, so several files are combined and compressed into one RFX file. The 3 to 9 compressed files are called g3x.enc. If you'd like to see the images and files included, just rename the file extension to .zip and double-click. RFX files are between 44 KB and 4 MB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. kexUT. Files like these have the following tags: eclipson, flite, printed, yellow and extra.
- 9% of all RFX files have the same signature effect ". The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. The file size is in the range of 1 KB to 2 KB. The following keywords are characteristic: class, effect, pass, path: glsl, predicate, render, semantics, technique, technique_count: 3, eut2 and pass_count: 1.
All other RFX files (51%) have no consistent format, often e.g. RoboForm saved data, LIST and MRFB. These files sometimes refer to dvcstate, xxtmpxx, bmxstate, shine or state. Just click the "Choose your .rfx file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your RFX file is.

an rfx container file holding various types of data is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with RFX files
- Associate the RFX file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open container file holding various types of data files. Because only the current version supports the latest RFX file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available RealFlight update.
- To make sure that your RFX file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
