What is an FX file?

FX files mostly belong to DirectX by Microsoft. FX files contain 3D effects' variables, functions, and techniques used by Direct3D, a (DirectX) technology used by Windows operating system to determine the appearance of 3D objects. The contents of FX files are stored in plain text format and they can be used to define lighting, shading, textures and other effects for rendering 3D data. All data in such FX files are structured into three sections including variables (declared at the top of an effect), functions (for implementing shader code), and techniques (for rendering sequences of effects). Windows operating systems also use FX file extension to store ReadyBoot trace and prefetch data which are used to optimize system load times and restart operations. Such FX files can be found in the \Windows\ReadyBoot\Prefetch\Readyboot\ directory. WordPerfect Office, a word processor for Windows also stores some of its template set data in FX files.

How to open an FX file

You need a suitable software like DirectX to open an FX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your FX file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a FX file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Windows is currently the most popular computer operating system in the software market. Its applications include server, desktop, mobile and other devices. FX files located in the \Windows\ReadyBoot\Prefetch\Readyboot\ directory of computers running Windows are Prefetch files used to optimize boot and restart operations. This file format is classified as System. Related links: How to speed up ReadyBoot
  4. WordPerfect (template) by Corel
WordPerfect is a word-processing software developed by Corel for Windows operating system. One of the template set files used by WordPerfect has FX extension. The full set will have the files NAME.CCF, NAME.FX, NAME.FX2, NAME.IX, and NAME.IX2. This file format is classified as Data.

FX file format:

Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Below is our analysis of the FX files:

Files with the FX extension are quite widely used. This file type has no uniform or dominant file format. The file formats most commonly found in FX files are:

The remaining 72% of all FX files are files with no common format, the following 6 formats exist: BluffTitler Effect, texture and PfB. Files like these are sometimes linked to shader, enbeffectpostpass, atmosphere, addrbk, circle, effect, bloom or water.
