What is a GC file?

GC files mostly belong to LightBurn. GC files are not a single format but represent different types of data depending on the software and use.

G-code instructions: These files contain commands that control machine tools like laser cutters and CNC milling machines. For example, applications such as LightBurn and Autodesk’s ArtCAM use them to direct cutting and milling paths.

Greeting Card Studio files: In some cases, a GC file holds project details for greeting card design used by software such as Greetings Card Factory or PrintMaster. They store layout and design information that is later printed.

Genericode code lists: Some GC files are XML based and follow the Genericode standard. They contain standardized code lists used for data exchange as explained in the Genericode documentation.

NOAA satellite data: A few GC files are used to store Level 1b data from NOAA satellites. These files hold meteorological data that specialized NOAA software can process, as seen on the NOAA website.

How to open GC files

Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. The content consists of readable text data, which can be read using a text editor. GC files can be up to 1 MB in size, but are often around 1 KB - 200 KB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>, <!-- DIAN, <Identification>, <gc:CodeList xmlns:gc="http://docs.oasis-open.org/codelist/ns/genericode/1.0/">, ShortName, Ultima modificaci, Genericode listas, n 18-02-2019 - evb--, -- DIAN Genericode listas de valores and LongName. An example of a file name is AlgoritmoCUFE-2.1.gc or Nuts.gc. Files like these have the following tags: tipo, salud, code, referencia, paises, peppol and pago.
