All about GFF Files
The GFF file type is primarily associated with Geneious.
What is a GFF file?
Other uses include:
How to open a GFF file
You need a suitable software like Geneious to open a GFF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your GFF file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a GFF file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert GFF files:
- Geneious
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. GFF files are often referred to as Geneious data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- SignalMap (Gene-Finding Format (GFF) Data File) by NimbleGen Systems Inc.The SignalMap program reads and displays standard GFF files, which are generated from NimbleGen Custom Microarrays. This file format is classified as Text. Related links: GFF File Format Specification
GFF file format:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Below is our analysis of the GFF files:
GFF is a very widely used file extension. The file type includes various formats for various programs. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 65% of all GFF files start with the magic bytes ##gff, which are always the first bytes of this file format. These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. The files are often between 4 KB and 61 MB in size. The file type is relatively new. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as ##gff-version 3, sequence, region, #!processor NCBI annotwriter, #!gff-spec-version 1.21 and genome-build-accession NCBI_Assembly. An example of a file name is GCF_009858895.2_ASM985889v3_genomic.gff. These files can be linked to genomic, prokka, annotation, grch, genes, plasmodb, cholerae and phages.
- 4% of all GFF files start with the bytes chr crucial for this file format. These files are text files, so they contain words and text. GFF files are between 5 KB and 60 MB in size. The following keywords are characteristic: Name and gene.
All the rest of the GFF files (31%) have different formats, such as XML, GSATIMG, GFF, JFFB, track, scaffold and Chr. Tagged as gene, minisar, image, genome, annotated, results, filter or galaxy. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your GFF file!

a gff annotation file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with GFF files
- Associate the GFF file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open annotation files. Because only the current version supports the latest GFF file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Geneious update.
- To make sure that your GFF file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .GFF file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
