Opening GKO Files
The GKO file type is primarily associated with EasyEDA.
What is a GKO file?
The GKO file is a Gerber Keep-Out layer used in PCB design. It marks areas on a printed circuit board where no copper, components, or other conductive material should be placed. This file instructs manufacturing tools to leave designated spaces clear, ensuring that critical regions remain free from interference during the production process.
- Purpose: Defines clear boundaries where parts or traces should not be placed.
- Usage: Employed in electronic design automation tools such as EasyEDA.
- Functionality: Guides PCB fabrication by indicating non-populated zones.
- Application: Integral in design packages that include multiple Gerber files for complete board manufacturing instructions.
FilExt.com tip: This file is a key component in ensuring safety and functionality in PCB production.
How to open a GKO file
You need a suitable software like EasyEDA to open a GKO file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your GKO file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a GKO file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert GKO files:
- EasyEDA
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. GKO files are often referred to as EasyEDA cads because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- EasyEDAA .GKO file is a Gerber Keep-Out Layer file. It is used in printed circuit board (PCB) design to define areas where components or traces should not be placed. The keep-out areas ensure appropriate clearances and prevent shorts or other manufacturing issues. These files are an integral part of the PCB design process, ensuring the board's functionality and manufacturability. They are typically generated by PCB design software like EasyEDA and are part of the broader Gerber file format suite used in PCB manufacturing. This file format is classified as CAD file.
GKO file format:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Below is our analysis of the GKO files:
An GKO file mainly uses a special format. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 85% of all GKO files start with the magic bytes G04, which are always the first bytes of this file format. If you open these files in a text editor, you can view and read the content yourself. The files are on average 640 bytes in size and range from 470 bytes to 1 KB. This file type is based on cutting-edge technology. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as G04 Scale, G04 Gerber Generator version 0.2*, G04 EasyEDA v6, G04 Layer: BoardOutline and G04 Layer: BoardOutlineLayer. The file name Gerber_BoardOutline.GKO or Gerber_BoardOutlineLayer.GKO is typical for these files. Files like these are sometimes connected to outline, gerber, board and layer.
- 8% of all GKO files start with the bytes * %FS, which are crucial for this file format. These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. The files are 2 KB to 120 KB in size, with a median of 17 KB. The keywords %IPPOS*%, %LPD*%, %MOIN*%, G54D10*, %FSLAX26Y26*%, ADD11C, %ADD10C,0.005906*% and ADD12C are typical for these files.
All other GKO files (7%) have no consistent format. Just click the "Choose your .gko file to view" button on this page to find out what your GKO file is.

a gko layout layer file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with GKO files
- Associate the GKO file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open layout layer files. Because only the current version supports the latest GKO file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available EasyEDA update.
- To make sure that your GKO file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .GKO file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
