Opening a GBL File
The GBL file type is primarily associated with Altium Designer.
What is a GBL file?
For many users, a GBL file is a Gerber Bottom Layer file used in printed circuit board (PCB) design. It holds the data for the lower copper layer that manufacturers use to produce the board. Software such as Altium Designer generates these files, and they can be viewed with dedicated Gerber viewers like Gerbv or GerberView.

How to open a GBL file
You need a suitable software like Altium Designer to open a GBL file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your GBL file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a GBL file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert GBL files:
- Altium Designer
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. GBL files are often referred to as Altium Designer cads because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Gravityball (File) by William D. HauseGravityball is a cerebral game mixed with arcade action, in which you devise an arena which shoots the ball from the start tile to the finish tile in a creative and entertaining way. Gravityball combines elements of the games The Incredible Machine, Marble Madness, Marble Drop, and Pinball. You can build your machine from an assortment of parts including bumpers, troughs, blocks, gravity fields, worm-hole transporters, switches and more. This file format is classified as Game.

GBL file format:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. In the following you will find our evaluation of the GBL files:
GBL is not that commonly used as a file extension. This file type is used by different programs with different formats. But the following two file formats are common:
- 50% of all GBL files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "G04" at the beginning. These files contain text and words, not binary data. Most of these files are 2 KB to 280 KB in size. The file type is relatively new. The following keywords are characteristic: G04 Scale, G04 Gerber Generator version 0.2*, G04 Layer: BottomLayer, FSLAX and G04 EasyEDA v6. Some examples of file names are Gerber_BottomLayer.GBL. These files are attributed to bottom, gerber, layer, copper and water.
- 10% of all GBL files start with the bytes %FS crucial for this file format. The contents of these files can even be read by a human. The files are on average 82 KB in size and range from 2 KB to 210 KB. The keywords ADD10C, FSLAX, %MOIN*%, G04 Layer_Color=16711680*, G04 Layer_Physical_Order=2*, %MOMM*%, ADD11C, ADD11R, ADD12C and ADD13R are typical for these files.
All other GBL files (40%) have no consistent format. They are often associated with design, gimbal or zino. If you want to find out what your GBL file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.
Technical Data for GBL File Extension
The following listing is compiled from the database produced by the 'Associate This!' program, selected data from the main FILExt database and file extension information submitted by users.

a gbl manufacturing design file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with GBL files
- Associate the GBL file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open manufacturing design files. Because only the current version supports the latest GBL file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Altium Designer update.
- To make sure that your GBL file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .GBL file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
