What is an HMM file?

HMM files mostly belong to HMMER. This file extension is used for different purposes. The most common use is to store hidden Markov models for bioinformatics work. How to open an HMM file

You need a suitable software like HMMER to open an HMM file. HMM file format:

A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our evaluation of the HMM files looks like this:

HMM is seldom used as a file extension and includes different formats for the applicable programs. But the following two file formats are common:

• 50% of all HMM files start with the bytes HMMER, which are crucial for this file format. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. HMM files are between 24 KB and 8 MB in size. The file type is relatively new. The keywords LENG, NAME, ALPH amino, MAP   yes, DATE, RF   no, CONS yes, MM   no, DESC, HMMER3/f [3.1b2 ! February 2015], CS   no, NSEQ, CS   yes and EFFN are typical for these files. A common filename is Resfams-full.hmm. Such files are related to resfams and pone.
• 9% of all HMM files store the data in the JFIF file format. JFIF is short for JPEG File Interchange Format. It is a bitmap graphic that uses JPEG compression. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The files are 320 KB to 320 KB in size, with a median of 320 KB. The following keywords are characteristic: JFIF. Examples of file names are file7.hmm.
