What is an IMM file?

IMM files mostly belong to IncrediMail. IMM files are not a single standard format. They can contain different types of data depending on their origin.
Email messages:
Some IMM files store email content. For example, one variant is the Imagine Mail file used by Imagine IT iMail (also known as the SurgeMail email file format). Other versions are used for IncrediMail email messages (IncrediMail), Yahoo! Mail messages (Yahoo Mail), or even Microsoft Outlook email messages.
Microscope images:
Another form of IMM file is an Olympus microscope image. These files use the Microsoft Compound format and are opened with specialized software such as the IMM Viewer; more details are available at this site.
Software modules:
A different use is found in the Intra-mart Module variant. These are packaged with a ZIP-based approach and can also appear as mind map files (iMindMap) linked to FreeMind, as noted on the Intra-mart webpage.

How can I open an IMM file?

You need a suitable software like IncrediMail to open an IMM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your IMM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a IMM file directly in the browser:. IMM file format:

To find out what program is needed to open IMM files, you need to determine the file format. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our analysis of the IMM files produces the following result:

The IMM file extension is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. The two most common formats are as follows:

• 20% of all IMM files have the same signature Re. The contents of these files can even be read by a human. The files are often between 39 KB and 10 MB in size. This file type was primarily in use more than 10 years ago. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as Received: from, Return-Path and with. Some examples of file names are Inbox.imm. Such files are related to deleted and items.
• 15% of all IMM files are based on the Microsoft Compound File format, also known as Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. This is a complex container format used by earlier versions of Microsoft Office and other Windows programs. Header signature for the CFB format with 8-byte Hex value D0CF11E0A1B11AE1 (which looks like "DOCFILE"). Sections and streams in the file have names like Contents and SUBSETS. The average file size is 350 KB with most files being between 36 KB and 1 MB in size. The following filename is common: 20180601_IMM Session.imm. Files like these are sometimes connected to session and assay.
