Opening an L File
The L file type is primarily associated with Dropbox.
What is an L file?
- Compressed File (Dropbox/GIS): Some L files use an internal format labeled LNK and serve as compressed data containers. They may hold ArcGIS layer data. For more information, visit Dropbox.
- Lexical Analyzer Source: Other L files are used by tools like Flex and Lex. In this role they function as input files that contain token definitions or source code for lexical analysis. Details can be found on the Flex wiki.
- PDF Document: A few L files are actually PDF documents. In this case they open in PDF viewers.
- Compiled Lua Script: Some L files hold compiled Lua code intended to run on a Lua interpreter.
Use the software that matches the file’s origin: open with a text editor if it shows source code, use a PDF reader if it displays a document layout, or rely on Dropbox/GIS tools for compressed archives.
FilExt.com note: This file is a multi-use container and its functionality is determined by how and where it was created.
How to open an L file
You need a suitable software like Dropbox to open an L file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your L file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a L file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

L file extension format:
If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our examination of the L files comes to the following conclusion:
The L file extension is quite widespread and is used by different programs with different formats. The file formats most commonly found in L files are:
- 60% of all L files are based on the popular LNK file format. LNK is short for link. An LNK file is a Windows shortcut that points to your original file or folder. Windows shortcut files can be used to deliver malware, so analyze unknown files here before double-clicking them. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The files are on average 690 bytes in size and range from 440 bytes to 1 KB. The file type is a fairly new file format. Files like these are about dcim, project, folder, docs, logo, documents, training, report, bank and data.
- 15% of all L files use the same file format, which have the signature 25 7B. If you open these files in a text editor, you can view and read the content yourself. The files are 200 bytes to 1 KB in size, with a median of 480 bytes. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. #include<stdio.h>, yytext, return, printf and char. The file name calc.l is typical for these files. Such files are related to program, gowri, assignment, lexical and count.
All the rest of the L files (25%) have different formats, the following 7 formats exist: PDF, LuaQ, option and wOF. The category is medical, flex, construction, information, agreements, discharge, structure, accounts, customer, drawings, services, minutes, package, product, scanner, manual, videos, audio, cards, court, power, video, colo, pack, room or temp. Just click the "Choose your .l file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your L file is.
