Opening an LFD File
The LFD file type is primarily associated with LucasArts.
What is an LFD file?
Most common among them are the LucasArts game data files found in titles like X-Wing and X-Wing Alliance. These files store game assets such as ship models and flight dynamics. They usually have a proprietary binary format that only specialized tools can read.
There are also LED display files used with Scala InfoChannel systems. In these cases the files, sometimes known as Laser Display File Format, control display content.
Another variant is the Lightwing file, which is XML-based and is produced by Lightform Creator to manage lighting designs. Lastly, some LFD files serve as laser scan files for use with LFM Viewer.
FilExt.com tip: Use the appropriate software to open your file. For example, if you suspect it is a game data file, refer to details on the X-Wing Special Edition page; if it appears to be part of a display system, check out the Scala site; and if it is XML-based, Lightform Creator may be needed as seen on Lightform Creator.

LFD file format details:
To find out what program is needed to open LFD files, you need to determine the file format. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our examination of the LFD files comes to the following conclusion:
LFD is seldom used as a file extension and is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. But the following two file formats are common:
- 50% of all LFD files belong to LucasFilm Data - LucasArts game resource. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The files are often between 8 KB and 860 KB in size. The file type was developed 20 years ago and is still in use today. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. RMAPresource. An example of a file name is XWING.LFD.
- 15% of all LFD files start with the bytes <Content id=", which are crucial for this file format. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. The files are on average 58 KB in size and range from 21 KB to 240 KB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as Content id, PlayerTypeVersion, version, packaged="true" datalinkTemplate="false" and <PlayerType>SPLAYER</PlayerType>.
The remaining 35% of all LFD files are files with no common format, the following 5 formats can be found: Lucas Film Data - Panel and XML. Sometimes used for menu. You can get all the details of your LFD file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .lfd file to analyze" above.
