What is an MPH file?

MPH files mostly belong to Multiphysics by COMSOL. MPH is the default file format for the multiphysics simulation software COMSOL. These files contain mesh and solution data stored as binary data and other information stored as plain text. They come in two types: Solved MPH files, and Compact MPH files. Solved files include all meshes and solutions, while Compact files include all the settings without meshes and solutions (usually to save data space).

• Usage: When editing MPH files, no more than one user is allowed at any given moment. If you try to access an MPH file that another user already has open, it will be locked, and while you will be able to read and edit it, you will not be able to save any changes made to it.
• Related filetypes: COMSOL uses three more file types: J-Files (model files for Java), M-Files for Matlab and VBA-Files for VBA.

How to open an MPH file

You need a suitable software like Multiphysics to open an MPH file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MPH file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MPH file directly in the browser:. How to convert MPH files to JPG, PDF, HTML, DOC, ...

Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. MPH is a very commonly used file extension and is mainly used by one program with a specific format. The file formats most commonly found in MPH files are:

• 80% of all MPH files are based on the zip format, that is, an MPH file includes multiple compressed files. A typical number of included files is 29. File names are e.g. clusterignore.xml, dmodel.xml, fileids.xml, fileversion, geometry1.mphbin, geommanager1.mphbin, guimodel.xml, mesh1.mphbin, model.xml, modelimage_large.png, modelimage.png, modelinfo.xml, solution1.mphbin, solutionblock1.mphbin, solutionstatic1.mphbin and usedlicenses.txt. A little tip: If you rename the file extension to .zip and then double-click, you will see the included files and images. MPH files can be up to 19 GB in size, but are often around 520 KB - 95 MB. The files contain the following words: fileversion, COMSOL 5, usedlicenses.txt, COMSOL, modelimage.png, IHDR and pHYs. Such files are related to plate, chladni, model, comsol, flow, liion, beta and heat.
• 5% of all MPH files save the data in RIFF file format. RIFF files store data in tagged chunks. There are primarily used to store multimedia such as sound and video. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. MPH files can be up to 9 MB in size, but are often around 200 KB - 3 MB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as SEKDMVPH, VIPLSVIP, MVPLLIST, RIFF and UUUUUU. Files like these are about fotoshow and image.

The remaining 15% of all MPH files are files with no common format, the following 5 formats exist: Java, DeskJet and PRODUCT.
