Opening an RDD File
The RDD file type is primarily associated with Visual FoxPro, EnergyPlus.
What is an RDD file?
The RDD file may refer to one of two specialized data formats. One variant is a FoxPro driver file used by Visual FoxPro. This file behaves as an internal executable component and is associated with memo handling in Clipper/FoxPro systems.
The other variant is a file that holds EnergyPlus simulation results data. It stores output from energy simulation runs and is meant to be read by simulation analysis tools. More details and support for this version can be found on the EnergyPlus webpage.
To work with these files, consider the following:
- Use Visual FoxPro or related database tools for the FoxPro driver version.
- Open the EnergyPlus simulation file with software designed for reading simulation results.
FilExt.com tip: Each version uses a specialized internal structure and should be handled with the appropriate tool to ensure proper viewing and management.
How do you open RDD files?
You need a suitable software like Visual FoxPro, EnergyPlus to open an RDD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your RDD file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a RDD file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert RDD files:
- Visual FoxPro, EnergyPlus
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. RDD files are often referred to as Visual FoxPro, EnergyPlus data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.

RDD file format:
Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our analysis of the RDD files produces the following result:
RDD is seldom used as a file extension and includes various formats for various programs. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 20% of all RDD files store the data in the EXE file format. EXE is the abbreviation for executable and is the standard executable file format on Windows. The format can be identified by the letters "MZ" at the beginning. Executable files can also be used to distribute viruses and other types of malicious software (malware). The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The average file size is 110 KB with most files being between 74 KB and 220 KB in size. The keywords !This program cannot be run in DOS mode are typical for these files. Examples of file names are Cavodbf.rdd or Dbfcdx.rdd. These files are often associated with dbfmemo.
- 10% of all RDD files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "! Program Version,EnergyPlus, Version " at the beginning. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. The files are often between 38 KB and 56 KB in size. The files contain the following words: ! Output:Variable Objects (applicable to this run), Program Version,EnergyPlus, YMD, Output:Variable,*,Site Outdoor Air Drybulb Temperature, hourly; !- Zon and Version 9. Examples of file names are eplusout.rdd.
The remaining 70% of all RDD files are files with no common format, the following 6 formats can be found: ZIP and PDF. These files sometimes refer to hvtrs, ctvaahoeltq, dksaopdcpr, quote or data. Just click the "Choose your .rdd file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your RDD file is.
Technical Data for RDD File Extension

an rdd specialized data file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with RDD files
- Associate the RDD file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open specialized data files. Because only the current version supports the latest RDD file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Visual FoxPro, EnergyPlus update.
- To make sure that your RDD file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
