All about RDG Files
The RDG file type is primarily associated with RDCMan.
What is an RDG file?
- Main Use: RDCman, short for Remote Desktop Connection Manager, is an application used in the management of remote desktop connections on Microsoft Windows PCs. RDCman uses RDG files to save connectivity settings that include a collection of servers to which the system is connected. The portability of RDG files is a big advantage. A user can share RDG files with other users. This enables the receiver to quickly connect to the available list of servers thus saving time by avoiding the hassle of manually adding them.
- Other Uses: RDG file format is also used to store data files associated with Morae software developed by TechSmith. Morae software is used in the understanding of customer experiences by recording user interactions, efficient analysis of results, and quickly sharing them. Morae uses its proprietary RDG file format to store video recording that can later be used to observe, log, analyze and share a user's experience and the reaction to the tested feature.
How to open RDG files
You need a suitable software like RDCMan to open an RDG file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your RDG file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a RDG file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert RDG files:
- RDCMan by Microsoft
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. RDG files are often referred to as RDCMan data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Morae (recorded video file) by TechSmithTechSmith Morae is a usability testing software for Windows operating systems developed for recording user interactions, efficiently analyzing results, and instantly sharing findings. It is intended for deeply understanding customer experiences. RDG file stores video data and is a proprietary file format used by Morae. This file format is classified as Video. RDG file format:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our evaluation of the RDG files is as follows:
As a file extension, RDG isn't very common and is mainly used by one program with a specific format. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 70% of all RDG files store the data in the XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. These files contain text and words, not binary data. RDG files can be up to 230 KB in size, but are often around 980 bytes - 31 KB. The file type is relatively new. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>, <file>, <RDCMan programVersion="2.7" schemaVersion="3">, name, <properties>, <credentialsProfiles />, <credentialsProfile inherit="None">, <credentialsProfiles>, profileName scope and <expanded>True</expanded>. Such RDG files store data about servers, server, remote and admin.
- If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The files are on average 35 MB in size and range from 560 KB to 70 MB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as NUCX and SessionSummary.xml. Such RDG files store data about usability, software, prueba, orweb and study.
All other RDG files (21%) have no consistent format. They are often associated with connections, master or azure. Just click the "Choose your .rdg file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your RDG file is.

an rdg configuration file is a special file format by Microsoft and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with RDG files
- Associate the RDG file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open configuration files. Because only the current version supports the latest RDG file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Microsoft manufacturer website after an available RDCMan update.
- To make sure that your RDG file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
