What is a RU file?

RU files mostly belong to Browser/Updater.

Your RU file may not be a single standard type. It can be one of several file kinds based on its internal format.
If the file is a firmware update (often used in Netgear devices), it contains update code that a device reads to refresh its software. In this case, the file is used by a dedicated updater tool provided by the device maker.
It can also be a web page snapshot saved in the MHTML format. This type bundles HTML, images, and scripts into one file. You can open it in a browser such as Google Chrome.

How to know what it is:

• Web Snapshot: If it displays as a complete web page when opened in a browser, it is in MHTML format.

How to open a RU file

RU file format:

To find out what program is needed to open RU files, you need to determine the file format. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. The RU file extension is rather rarely used and has no uniform or dominant file format. The two most popular formats are as follows:

• 15% of all RU files are based on the well-known MHTML file format. MHTML is short for MIME encapsulation of aggregate HTML documents. It is a web page archive format which contains a complete webpage (text, code and images) in a single computer file. These files are not pure binary files and are therefore readable and interpretable with a text editor. The files are on average 1 MB in size and range from 340 KB to 2 MB. This file type is new and state-of-the-art. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. From: <Saved by Blink>, Snapshot-Content-Location, https, Subject, utf-8 and mail. A usual file name is -Mail.Ru. Such files are related to imgsrc.
• 9% of all RU files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "§y^" at the beginning. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The files are often between 720 KB and 1 MB in size. Examples of file names are XR500.RU. These files are attributed to update.

All the rest of the RU files (76%) have different formats, often e.g. JPG, ZIP, PDF and TFORM. These files are often connected to frenglish, english, yandex, workbook, local, tbiji, world or text.
