File extension: RUL

What is a RUL file

RUL files mostly belong to InstallShield by Revenera. A RUL file is a script containing source code and a set of rules that InstallShield uses to create Windows program installers. Such files are called InstallScripts. Some of them include Setup.rul and FeatureEvents.rul. A RUL script can be edited with the Script Editor component of InstallShield and compiled using the "Compile" button in the "Build" menu. RUL is also the filename extension of a rule used by TurboTax tax preparation and filing service. Another type of RUL file is a repository of spam rules that SpamAI uses to provide spam blocking functionality. A different RUL file contains design rules for a printed circuit board.

How do you open RUL files?

You need a suitable software like InstallShield to open a RUL file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your RUL file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a RUL file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

  • Associate the RUL file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open install script/rules. Because only the current version supports the latest RUL file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Revenera manufacturer website after an available InstallShield update.
  • To make sure that your RUL file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
