Opening SMA Files
The SMA file type is primarily associated with SourceMod.
What is an SMA file
Game Server Plugin Files: SMA files are mainly used as source code for game server plugins. They contain scripted instructions to modify or add features on servers running games like Half-Life. These files are written for use with frameworks such as SourceMod and AMX Mod X. They are plain text files that need to be compiled before the game server can run them. See more details at AMX Mod X.
Other Uses: Some SMA files serve other specific roles. They include:
- Compressed Archives: Files that use ZIP compression to store game asset archives. Related information is available at Sage 50.
- 3D Animation Data: Files that hold 3D animation information. They may contain Studiomdl animation data used with 3ds Max or the Half-Life SDK. Additional details can be found at Autodesk 3ds Max.
- Diagrams: Files that use the Microsoft Compound format to store SmartPlant instrumentation diagrams.
FilExt.com note: Overall, these files can be either plain text or binary depending on the internal file format used (such as Source, Source2, ZIP, or Microsoft Compound). To work with a given SMA file, use a text editor and appropriate compiler for plugin development, an archive extractor for ZIP content, or the software native to the other formats (like 3ds Max for animation files).
How to open SMA files
You need a suitable software like SourceMod to open an SMA file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SMA file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SMA file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert SMA files:
- SourceMod
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. SMA files are often referred to as SourceMod plugins because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Counter-Strike (Add-on Source Code) by Valve CorporationCounter-Strike 1.6 is a FPS (First Person Shooter) game by Valve Corporation. AMX Mod is a MetaMod plugin that allows you to write scripts for Half-Life and its Mods, using Compuphase's SmallC scripting language. This file is a text file that can be opened in any text editor. Compliers are used to compile *.SMA source code files into *.AMX or *.AMXX, depending on which scripting program for Counter-Strike 1.6 you use. AMX Mod X is another. This file format is classified as Source Code. Related links: AMX Mod, AMX Mod X
- Scrapbook Factory (Album File) by Nova Development CorporationArt Explosion Scrapbook Factory has everything you need: a collection of templates for scrapbook pages and other keepsake projects, featuring photo-realistic graphics. This file format is classified as Graphic.
- Silva (Media Archive) by InfraeSilva is a completely browser-based CMS for creating publications for the Web, paper, and other media. The archive contains all XML and assets exported from the content management system. The Mime types used with this association are: application/zip. This file format is classified as Archive.
SMA file format:
To find out what program is needed to open SMA files, you need to determine the file format. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Below is our analysis of the SMA files:
The SMA file extension is quite common and is mainly used by one program with a specific format. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 75% of all SMA files save the data in Source file format. A source code is the set of instructions written by a programmer using a computer programming language like JavaScript, C++ or Basic. This code is translated into machine language by a compiler. The translated result is called app, program or executable. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. SMA files are between 1 KB and 31 KB in size. The file type is old but is used even today. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as #include <amxmodx>, define, PLUGIN, #include <fakemeta>, #include <amxmisc>, #include <hamsandwich>, VERSION and cstrike. Such files sometimes refer to menu, weapon, extra, system, admin, rank, knife, crosshair, multijump, custom, zombie, reapi and spec.
- 5% of all SMA files are based on the zip format, so several files are compressed and saved in one SMA file. Primarily 2 to 215 files are included. A little tip: If you rename the file extension to .zip and then double-click, you will see the included files and images. Most of these files are 9 KB to 280 MB in size. Data.sma or Base.sma is a typical file name. Files like these are about mult, model, plug, activation and sage.
The remaining 20% of all SMA files are different files with different signatures, frequently e.g. DOC, SMA and DRAW. Tagged as mult, ultimate, plugin, kill, sounds, model, core, csgo or plug. If you want to find out what your SMA file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

How to solve problems with SMA files
- Associate the SMA file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open plugin files. Because only the current version supports the latest SMA file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available SourceMod update.
- To make sure that your SMA file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .SMA file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
