What is an SMX file

SMX files mostly belong to SourceMod.

SMX files serve two major functions. The primary use is as a plugin file for SourceMod, which runs in the Metamod: Source environment. These files are compiled from SourcePawn scripts and are deployed on game servers to extend or modify gameplay features. Because they are in a binary format, simple text editors will not display their source code or structure clearly.
Some SMX files are also used to store animation data in Age of Empires II. These files, managed with tools like SLX Studio, contain animation information for in-game units. Although their function is different from SourceMod plugins, they still rely on a compiled structure to operate properly.

How to open SMX files

You need a suitable software like SourceMod to open an SMX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SMX file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SMX file directly in the browser:. SMX file format:

If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Below you will find our evaluation of the SMX files:

SMX is one of the most common file extensions and mainly uses a defined SMX format. However, the following two file formats are common:

• 80% of all SMX files use the same file format, which have the signature FFPS. They consist of unreadable binary data. The file size is in the range of 4 KB to 47 KB. The file type is relatively new. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as FFPS, .code, .data and .publics. These files can be linked to retakes, admin, csgo, warmod, abner, weapons, adminmenu, resetscore and bots.
• 15% of all SMX files start with the bytes SMPX crucial for this file format. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. SMX files are between 36 KB and 2 MB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. SMPX. Some examples of file names are b_misc_foundation_castle_x1.smx or a_alfred_attackA_x1.smx. Files like these are sometimes connected to castle, misc, foundation, attacka, tree and idlea.
