Opening SSI Files
The SSI file type is primarily associated with Image viewer.
What is an SSI file
The SSI file extension is used in several ways. The most common internal format follows the JFIF standard, meaning the file stores a JPEG image with EXIF data. More details are available at JPEG.org.
- JPEG Image File: Contains image data and associated metadata that many image viewers can open.
- Server Side Includes: May include compressed, encrypted content intended for web page processing. This use employs GZIP compression and pertains to dynamic web content.
- Dental Scan Data: Holds 3D scan data used in dental CAD applications. This type is managed with software such as Exocad. Visit Exocad for more details.
- Survey Data: Stores survey results as produced by Lighthouse Studio from Sawtooth Software. More information can be found at Sawtooth Software.
FilExt.com note: Identify the file’s origin to decide which program to use for opening it. A hex or text editor can help reveal the header details if the file’s purpose is not clear.
How can I open an SSI file?
You need a suitable software like Image viewer to open an SSI file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SSI file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SSI file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

SSI format details:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Below you will find our evaluation of the SSI files:
You will often come across the SSI file type. This mainly uses a defined SSI format. The file formats most commonly found in SSI files are:
- 70% of all SSI files are using the well-known JFIF file format to store the data. JFIF is short for JPEG File Interchange Format. It is a bitmap graphic that uses JPEG compression. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. SSI files can be up to 97 KB in size, but are often around 23 KB - 56 KB. The file type is very recent. The keywords !22222222222, $.' ",#, '9=82<.342 and JFIF are typical for these files. A usual file name is 5003_1390_2018000010_ALF_20180601.ssi.
- 9% of all SSI files are based on the popular GZIP file format. Gzip is a compressed archive file format. Gzip (GNU zip) is only capable of compressing a single file. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. A typical file size is 1 KB.
The remaining 21% of all SSI files are different files with different signatures, the following 5 formats can be found: UTF-8, SSI and SSIFormat. They are often associated with vsdisk. If you want to find out what your SSI file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

How to solve problems with SSI files
- Associate the SSI file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open image files. Because only the current version supports the latest SSI file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Image viewer update.
- To make sure that your SSI file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .SSI file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
