A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our examination of the SZ files comes to the following conclusion:

The SZ file extension is not widely used. Such a file includes different formats for the applicable programs. However, the following two file formats are common:

• 30% of all SZ files are using the well-known MP4 file format to store the data. MP4 is a multimedia container format used to store video and audio and allows streaming over the Internet. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The average file size is 85 MB with most files being between 13 MB and 220 MB in size. The file type is relatively new. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as ftypisom, isomiso2avc1mp41, free and mdat. Files like these are about explorer, reading, unit and lessona.
• 15% of all SZ files belong to Snzip compressed. They consist of unreadable binary data. A typical file size is 200 KB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as sNaPpY and date. Examples of file names are 2020-06-01 10-30.sz. These files are often associated with json, store, snappy, redis, init and task.
