What is a ZS file?

ZS files mostly belong to CraftTweaker. ZS files serve two main roles. They may be used as compressed archives that employ the Zstandard compression algorithm to pack game resources or data into smaller files. In this form, you need a decompression tool that supports Zstandard to extract the contents.
Alternatively, ZS files often contain ZenScript code used for game modding. These plain text scripts work with tools like CraftTweaker to modify game behavior, alter recipes, or change other in‐game elements, especially in Minecraft.

How to open ZS files

You need a suitable software like CraftTweaker to open a ZS file. To view or edit ZS files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our analysis of the ZS files produces the following result:

ZS is a very commonly used file extension and includes many different file formats. The two most common formats are as follows:

• 15% of all ZS files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "(µ/ý" at the beginning. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. A typical file size is 38 KB. This file type is new and state-of-the-art. The translated result is called app, program or executable. These files are text files, so they contain words and text. The files are 560 bytes to 20 KB in size, with a median of 7 KB. The files contain the following words: import mods, import crafttweaker, item and IItemStack. A common filename is TinkersConstruct.zs. Such files are related to recipes, construct, tinkers, loot, projecte, additions, actually, mekanism, armor, dropt and fire.
