What is a TLV file?

TLV files mostly belong to VLC. TLV Files use a Type-Length-Value encoding scheme. Each data block holds a tag (type), a byte count (length), and the actual content (value).
These files are used in several ways:
  • Video Containers - Some TLV files are part of AVI video files using the RIFF format. They store video data along with extra tagged metadata. See Audio Video Interleave details.
  • Metadata Storage - Other TLV files hold navigation or configuration information. For example, they serve as TomTom metadata files and are used to encode data in a Tag Length Value format.
  • Network and System Data - TLV files may also contain items like Cisco Trust List values, data for communication protocols, tax or legal voucher information, and files used by animation software like OpenToonz (with support from tools such as Wireshark) or cash registers like the Casio QT-6100.
  • The structure allows systems to add, remove, or update specific data segments without altering the overall file design. To view a TLV file, you need to use the proper application. For example, if it is an AVI video using tagged data, a program like VLC may open it, whereas metadata files may require specialized software (such as TomTom Home or Cisco Unified Communications Manager).

This is a proprietary data format used in creating data for laser projection systems used in manufacturing. The Mime types used with this association are: application/trulaser. TLV file extension format:

If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files.
